Sébastien Angers at the 2013 ACORN Conference in Moncton.
Paying attention to your pastures and grazing times is most important for maximising yield. Pastures provide most energy at certain stages in growth. Pigs will ruin a pasture if not taken off or put on at the wrong stage of plant growth. The mix of species in a pasture can be adjusted according to every farm and climate. Pay attention to managing pastures for best longevity and results.

Sébastien Angers from the 2013 ACORN Conference in Moncton.
Growing organic no-till soybeans requires a well thought out rotation and planning that involves corn, soy and green manures. The technique of being able to incorporate residues and weed control without tilling requires much tinkering and accurate use of tools, but the improved soil structure and mineralisation provide many benefits to the crops.

A workshop with Graham Calder of P3 Permaculture Design from the 2013 ACORN Conference in Moncton. Permaculture is a design science that is based in the observation of nature. It involves looking at what natural systems have been doing for millions of years and integrating the most successful practices into our lives, farms, architecture, etc. Permaculture is rooted in ethics. Its guiding principles are a framework to respond to the vast challenges that lie ahead for us in our world.
ACORN Conference, Complementary Agriculture, Pests, Disease & Weeds
In this presentation from the 2013 ACORN conference in Moncton, Dr. Andrew Hammermeister explains how weed management is best approached with many "small hammers". Weeding early allows your plants to fulfill their potential. There are numerous cultural and physical practices you can implement depending on the weed type. Remember to approach weeds from the perspective that they are filling an ecosystem function.

Food forest gardening does not mean gardening in a forest, but like a forest. It is an imitation of a woodland ecosystem, focusing medicinal and edible plants that thrive together. Unlike dedicated gardens, they are low maintenance while still offering an abundance of food and medicine. At the 2016 Homesteading Symposium in Dieppe, Estelle Drisdelle shares her insight and years of experience on maintaining food forests and guilds.

The organic sector in Nova Scotia is a growing industry and it is important to ensure that ‘Organic’ means ‘Organic’. Recently, Nova Scotia enacted the NS Organic Grade Regulations which requires that any product sold or labeled as organic must be certified through a third-party certification body. This document describes the organic certification process and standards in Nova Scotia, and most of the information applies to any farmer in Canada.
