Shannon and Bryan are the young farmers at Broadfork Farm. They each spent years learning to farm while apprenticing on successful organic farms. They met while working on neighbouring farms and decided to spend their lives living and farming together.
They farm organically because of their mutual desire to promote health....health of their customers, health of the planet, health of the soil, watersheds, and air, health of their community members, and health for themselves as farmers. They are passionate about growing and eating fresh produce, in particular, unique varieties that are colourful and delicious. They have also been incorporating more cut flowers into their fields each year, which offers many benefits on the farm level (biodiversity, pollinator health, crop rotation) and at the market (beauty and nutrition for the soul).
Shannon and Bryan have a strong interest in vegetable seed production on their farm in order to enhance the adaptation of particular varieties to the unique conditions of their farm and the qualities most appreciated by their customers. The benefit of farming together full-time is the connection they both develop to their land and to each other. The challenge of farming together full-time is....trying to get along 100% of the time while both having strong opinions on the RIGHT way to do a task.
