Going Cold Turkey
We transitioned with high-producing Holsteins and didn’t cut down on inputs before. We just went cold turkey. Output dropped but in our 4th year, output started coming up again.”

Some transitional growers simply stop using all chemicals on all of their land at one time. This strategy is the fastest way to convert the farm, but this can be risky. Depending on your former farming practices and the crops you have grown, it may take many years to build up the soil organic matter and soil life to a state that will sustain high crop yields organically. Even though it takes only three years for conventional land to be certified as organic, it can take longer, sometimes as long as ten years, for crop yields to rebound and fully adjust to organic growing.
