Assessing your organic advantage

Going organic requires serious consideration, which isn't to say that there aren't some people who make the leap first and then think about the implications. That being said, it's usually wise to follow your mother's advice of 'look before you leap'.

The ACORN Organic Path will provide you with ideas, questions and tools to assess your decision to go organic. You will want to appraise the market and your placement in it (what will your customers say? are you close to distribution channels?). You will also want to consider if you are capable of keeping up the record keeping and audit trails, as well as embracing the new production techniques and ideas.

There are many ways that your farm could distinquish itself in the marketplace, but organic certification is certainly one of the most recognizable niche sectors that you can align with. Due to consumer confidence, strong support systems (ie. access to free extension specialists), and continually increasing demand for organic products, 'going organic' may be just the path you've been looking for!
