Preparing for Transition

As Winston Churchill once said, “plans are of little importance but planning is essential.” The transition to certified organic farming requires the effective development and adaptation of fixed plans and the use of tools to plot strategic directions, day-today operations and manage risks. Taking the time to plan your transition or new business may prevent many future problems. Of course, unexpected challenges or unanticipated benefits may arise (a spell of cold wet weather at harvest-time can destroy a crop, or a cow with BSE a thousand miles away can increase interest in local, organic beef). You might end up doing something quite different from what you plan. However the process of planning, and the development of alternate scenarios may enable you to avoid many obstacles, and to help you identify the best path to follow.
