Write things down!

Effective recordkeeping and planning is an integral part of certified organic farming. It is required to document practices and activity, provide assurance to the consumer and certifier and helps you prepare for challenges. Written plans and records can have numerous beneficial impacts on your business:

  • Writing down goals (versus just thinking or talking about them) illustrates commitment to yourself and others. It makes your goals harder to ignore.
  • It provides a starting point for developing a vision, action plans and specialized operation, business or strategic plans.
  • It can facilitate comments and advice from family, friends, customers and advisors.
  • Looking back on past field or sales records can assist in identifying problems, trends and causes, and inform decisions about adding amendments or building new marketing facilities.
