Jolly Farmer Products Inc.

“Integrity, Quality and Reliable Service since 1967”
Located near the Canada/U.S. border, Jolly Farmer Products Inc.
occupies just over 350 acres of certified organic farmland in
Northampton, New Brunswick, and is managed cooperatively by 25
families. Established in 1967 as a conventional operation, this
ever-evolving business has converted almost three quarters of its
fields to organic production.
Over the years, Jolly Farmer has offered a wide variety of products,
ranging from meats, vegetables, and fruits to baked goods. With
interests in becoming more environmentally sustainable, they made the
transition to organic production in 2001. They grow 40 different
species of vegetables, everything from their prized sweet corn, melons,
and tomatoes.
Building on their desire to bridge the connections between their farm
and their community, Jolly Farmer started a CSA (Community Supported
Agriculture) operation in 2009. Fantastic feedback meant that within
two years, their CSA program tripled in size, becoming the largest box
delivery program in the Province. Jolly Farmer also offers a
unique feature of seasonal CSA box deliveries, which allow customers a
diversified supply (including fresh greens!) throughout the year. While
all of the vegetables supplied in the CSA boxes are organic, Jolly
Farmer also offers additional fruit and meat/cheese shares,
incorporating some of their conventional production for interested
clients.
Rather than simply growing all the vegetables required of their
clients, Jolly Farmer also aspires to help as many other growers as
possible to raise healthy nutritious crops. This is why another
huge feature of their certified organic production are organic growing
mixes, compost, and worm castings as well as equipment for compost tea
making. They supply farmers and gardeners all across the Maritimes with
these fantastic products.
Beyond their certified organic production, the farm features a small
(uncertified) dairy for cheese production, and a fully operational
country kitchen producing everything from bread to meat pies to cookie
dough logs. Additionally, for those seeking a companion dog or a guard
dog, Jolly Farmer raises and sells beautiful, pure-bred Great Pyrenees
dogs.
Although not certified, the livestock production at Jolly Farmer
includes cattle, pigs, sheep, broiler chickens in the summer, and a
small flock of hens. Most of the livestock are pastured during the
summer on Jolly Farmers’ certified organic acreage, and during the
winter months are fed harvested organic and chemical free forage. While
interested in certifying their livestock production, Jolly Farmer cites
their main hindrance is in the cost and distance to transport certified
organic feed, compared to their local source of non-G.M.O. grain.
Indeed, “Integrity, Quality, Service” is what has continued to build
Jolly Farmers’ business and success for the past forty years.
