Beach Lane Lavender

Anita and Dave Carlson purchased land from Dave’s father in 2000 with the view of creating a cottage-industry operation where they could grow a product on their own patch of land, process it on premise, and then sell a value-added product – all grown and packaged on site.

In order to achieve this goal, Anita and Dave had to find a product that had all of the potential for a cottage-industry operation.  After experimenting with many different products such as flax, psyllium, and amaranth they settled on their favourite; the lovely-scented lavender.

Lavender has many benefits as a crop; it requires little machinery and has the advantage of being a perennial crop.  Anita and Dave have invested a lot of time into their operation and it shows – they have an efficient set-up with beautiful fields of lavender and a wide selection of products available.  They pride themselves on trying to use all parts of the plant in as many different ways as possible, “We have been delighted to discover how many useful items can come from one product,” says Anita, and it’s true:  from aftershave to gourmet foods – they produce it all!

Dave and Anita decided to grow certified organic lavender so that they could be accountable to their customers:  “We care that our customers have confidence in us, and we want to do what we can to assure them that their confidence is well-founded.”  They harvest all of their lavender by hand and they also propagate all of their own lavender, which is not an easy task!

As Beach Lane Lavender Farm becomes more established, Dave and Anita are making plans to use their abilities to help others grow sustainable solutions in developing countries, such as "Dawn for the Poor", a holistic ministry working alongside masses of recently relocated and displaced urban poor in The Philippines.  For now, they are further developing their own agro-tourism by having a seasonal roadside stand and an annual Victorian Lavender festival – where they feature all of their products, live demonstrations, live classical music and a lavender u-pick!
