Apple Lane Farm Inc.
Amidst
75 acres of conventional apple orchards and 4 children, Doug and
Marlene live and work on their 3rd generation farm where they have
cultivated a 15 acre gem of organic apples.
Their
organic orchard is located in an altogether separate area from the rest
of their farm. It is surrounded by forest, which provides a natural
buffer against wind damage, disease, and potential pesticide
contamination. It also means that their organic orchard is so
picturesque that it’s not uncommon for them to receive requests for
wedding photos in their orchard. They also have a walking trail in
their organic orchard that leads to some very scenic waterfalls.
Considering
they already are quite a large farming operation, the organic orchard
is a relatively small part of their business; however, it is close to
their hearts and beliefs. “Organics is the way of the future,” says
Marlene, “and we are proactively trying to meet the demand of
consumers”.
With four children, they are quite the
typical family farm – with their children running the farm stand and
helping out occasionally with the orchards.
They grow
ten different varieties of apples ranging from Ginger Gold in September
to Northern Spy in November; all of which are especially tasty and
ecologically grown in accordance with the Pro-Cert (OCPP) certification
regulations.
