Our Garden in Taymouth is a small family farm, the collaborative effort of Peter, Jean, Luke and Jenn. They have all come to gardening in different ways, each bringing a unique perspective to the vision and produce that they grow.
Peter deMarsh, the full time farmer at Our Garden in Taymouth, is deeply involved with national and international family forestry organizations and a number of local community development projects. Jean is an integral part of the local community center and its development of their local Market. Like many, Peter began gardening with the hopes of producing all of the vegetables required for his family. However, he quickly found that there was more than enough to produce for friends and neighbours, all of whom have been pleased with the quality and taste of the vegetables. In the late 1990’s, Peter, with help from his son Luke, expanded the operation to a full-sized market garden.
Luke grew up helping his father in the garden and has since become increasingly enthusiastic about farming, and about plants in general Luke believes small-scale food production is an important skill to develop locally, and a hopeful process to be apart of in the current state of global agricultural. He has studied ethnobotany, and herbal medicine. Committed to learning how to grow and work with medicinal plants, Luke is striving to increase the biodiversity of the farm. There are plans to create a garden space specifically for medicinal and native plants, for their culinary and healing properties, as well as for their beauty.
Jenn Thomas has been involved with the garden since 2003, matching her passion for food with her love of farming. She is constantly curious about the process of growing from the beginning to end of the season. She has worked for many years in Fredericton at Aura Whole Foods, forever learning about the nutritional and medicinal properties of food.
The extensive garden is located on the banks of the Nashwaak River in Taymouth, New Brunswick, approximately 25 minutes outside of Fredericton. The locals know it as the ‘old Munroe Farm’, a place that has been a part of the community for 200 years. The farm is equipped with rich topsoil that allows the family to grow a wide variety of products. The garden is bordered by forestland, which adds biodiversity and an excellent buffer zone.
Our Garden in Taymouth has been a vender at the weekly Taymouth Market since its beginning. The market runs from June to December. Every year the family grows a full range of common vegetables, specializing in root crops “which just naturally seem to grow best here,” claims Peter. Their favourite thing to grow, however, is kale “a vegetable superstar, definitely my favourite!” says Jenn. She adds, “and you can harvest kale in the winter by digging it out of the snow. Such a gratifying process to pick fresh greens in the winter!” They grow several varieties, including Curly and Red Russian kale.
Peter, Jean, Jenn and Luke are committed to helping build a healthy and bountiful local food supply. In the future they would like to see Taymouth have its own store complete with a community root cellar and drying space. In the meantime, “what’s really rewarding” says Peter, “is hearing someone from the market say that the carrots they bought from us were the first they were able to get their kids to eatit makes it all worthwhile.”
