Sustenance Gardens

Sustenance Gardens is located atop a drumlin peak in beautiful Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia.  The farm has lovely raised beds filled with colourful and unique varieties of lettuce, complete with happy free-range chickens pecking about and a few field rows that are intensely farmed for market gardening.  Specializing in herbs, heirloom vegetables, and lettuces for gourmet salad mixes, B.W. is expanding his repertoire as he continues to develop the land on his farm.  He is working hard to encourage his knowledge and experience in all things “green” – sustainable and organic.

Taking part in a green Agribusiness program in Victoria inspired B.W. to start a market garden in Nova Scotia.  He has learned a lot along the way and he’s now quite the gardener! He uses a raised bed garden structure for intensive planting and he has studied permaculture and uses biodynamic techniques for top quality products. He also loves vermicompost – one of the many reasons his plants are vibrantly colourful and healthy!  He’s proud to be notoriously “by-the-book” when it comes to certifying standards.  He currently sells locally at the Mahone Bay and New Germany farmer’s markets.

Having worked from dishwasher to sous-chef in the restaurant industry, B.W. is well aware of a chef’s desire to serve an exceptional menu using premium quality ingredients.  He has a keen interest in working with chefs and restaurants to help them achieve this goal with local, organic options.

B.W. envisions his farm and home as a “sustainable” research station – where he can use his curiosity and experimental tendencies to the benefit of others who wish to learn more about and develop new sustainable methods of living.  He has a carefully considered plan to be “off the grid” by 2009 that is already well on its way with his two large solar hot water panels on the side of his retrofitted home.   “I’m with the sustainable pattern of development,” says B.W, matter-of-factly, “in another 100 years from now it’s the way we’ll have to be doing it and I want to turn this place into a functioning learning and farming community.”
