"Pure Food ... Naturally!"
“Against the grain” might in fact be the best description for Speerville Flour Mill. Definitely not your typical company, they run their business with the goal of maintaining a standard to serve high quality, whole foods to everyone in their local market, and with a commitment to helping local producers find a sustainable and viable market. Not only that, but the Mill is certified organic!
Speerville is an excellent place to get you started on the local organic track. They are the only source for local and organic high quality grains including organic bread wheat, organic cereal grains, organic baking mixes, organic kamut, spelt, rye, oats, barley, quinoa, corn, buckwheat, amaranth as well as other grains. They also function as a distributor for other local and organic specialties such as pastas, organic peas and beans, organic apple cider vinegar, organic maple products and more! Friendly and professional, they provide excellent customer service, helping you make unique and healthy wholesome food choices.
Speerville started as small as they come from rescuing one initial load of high quality milling wheat destined to waste without a market in 1982, to their present full scale operation with 11 employees. Speerville started small by encouraging local farmers to grow for them. They have since grown tremendously, and now carry over 140 items! They are continually trying to develop what they do, concentrating on providing the healthiest, most local, organic wholegrain and wholesome products they can possibly provide. They are also pioneers in helping to reinvigorate and popularize the ancient grain of red-fife wheat, dated from the 1820’s! The red fife has changed very little since then and proves an excellent quality flour grain, even for people who cannot normally tolerate wheat!
Speerville also prides themselves on being advocates for healthier living. Buying local and supporting a healthy economy and eating organically will support a healthier planet., “We have always maintained that education is a part of this business,” says Tony Grant., “People need to understand the full price they are paying for food produced in an unsustainable way. There are many hidden costs in our current food trends.”
Speerville Flour Mill sees itself as a company that will last through the difficulties ahead, prepared for the instability of grain prices, climate change, and the oil crisis. By supporting Speerville Flour Mill, you are supporting Maritime best. Join the ranks in favour of local organics!
