Selwood Green Farm
“I farm because it’s what I want to do,” says Norbert Kungl of Selwood Green Farm - and he sounds just as firmly convicted as when he first began his farming career in the early 1980’s. Norbert is not your typical, rural farm boy. He has an impressive profile, having studied agriculture in Germany and achieving the equivalent of a Masters in Agriculture with the intention of going into agricultural international development aid. At some point during his education career he decided that he actually wanted to be an organic farmer, and he sticks to his dream to this day, happily continuing his education in his own fields.
Norbert’s background is evident upon visiting his farm with large, beautifully kept and vibrant fields he also has one of the largest variety of organic products available in the area. Selwood Green Farm produces all products “from A Z: asparagus to zucchini” with a goal of “growing the greatest variety for the longest possible time.” Norbert is well versed in methods of season extension and successive planting successfully making products available for the full season. Selling at three different weekly farmer’s markets, Norbert’s focus is to be as local as possible. He hopes to create a regional distribution area so that he can sell directly to his clients. Norbert’s extensive knowledge extends into the greater organic farming community, as he is proud to share his acquired experience with other organic farmers many of whom credit Norbert for clueing them in to the most successful varieties of lettuce and carrots.
Nova Scotia is fortunate to have such a committed and knowledgeable farmer because if it weren’t for “the good feeling here in the east,” he may have settled in British Colombia. He moved to Canada as a first generation immigrant from Germany, and with a dream of living in proximity to the ocean, he toured the West coast on an exploratory trip. Eventually, going against the common opinion in favour of BC, he chose Nova Scotia and he still seems quite happy with his choice! Norbert also achieved his coastal dream, as his farm is located on a gorgeous piece of ocean front property with the most beautiful view of Blomidon point from their 30 acres of production fields. He has now been farming since 1987 in the area he lives, on the shores of the Minas Basin in Walton-Bramber, Nova Scotia.
