NS Organic Farmers

Pinnacle Farms

Looking for the absolutely best cared for animals (truly free range, grass-fed and finished, even primarily hand-fed) – from a local organic source?  Look no further; Pinnacle Farms has taken all of these extra steps with their animals. You can feel confident that animals that were cared for with sensitivity, kindness and most importantly - love provided the meat you are eating.  Pinnacle Farms acknowledges that animals are sentient beings and they are treated accordingly.  They receive the best possible care and feed, allowing you to feel confident that the meat you are eating is the healthiest, most environmentally friendly, and tastiest available.  The farm is certified to international organic standards by Eco Cert – Garantie Bio and they are leaders in the field of raising their animals in a compassionate way –they will be the first farm in Canada to be certified by the Animal Welfare Institute; another way of assuring you of the high standards they adhere to.

Rick and Sue Cheeseman moved their organic expertise to the Roslin area in 2005 after having farmed organically in Ontario since 1990.  They are passionate about trying to “support the preservation of livestock genetics by raising heritage breeds of poultry and cattle.”  They have the largest herd of registered purebred RED POLL cattle in Atlantic Canada.  RED POLL is a dual-purpose heritage breed – raised for both its excellent meat and milk.  It is also a unique breed in that it produces exquisite lean meat on one hundred percent grass and forage with no grain, which is – believe it or not – a rarity in our conventionally raised meats.  These animals produce the best of both milk and meat, while eating what cows are meant to eat:  grass!

The most loyal employees on Pinnacle Farms are the Livestock Guardian Dogs, of which there are two, and one herding dog – who keep the farm running – protecting the animals from predators, herding, and generally keeping things cheery on the farm.  “Without the LGDs,” claims Sue, “there’d be no free-range anything.  We don’t cage or enclose our hens, ducks or meat birds, so we rely heavily on the talents of Uschi and Gus.”  Pinnacle Farms has limited numbers of free-range, organic eggs, duck and chicken, plenty of organic beef and by Christmas, heritage turkey.

In the future, Rick and Sue are hoping to increase farm diversity by expanding to accommodate organic grass based hogs.  “Pigs have got to be the worst treated animals in conventional agriculture,” says Sue, “we want to offer our customers an excellent alternative: animals that have a great life - well-treated and allowed ‘natural expression’ – which if you are a piglet means having a lot of fun growing up.”

Pinnacle Farms goes even further by growing grass hydroponically in the winter months to supplement their animals, helping to maintain their high herd health status.  This means that the livestock are fed the healthiest diet– all year round!

Rick and Sue Cheeseman are extremely committed to doing what they do in absolutely the best possible way:  in full recognition of the value of all forms of life.  They are leaders in their field:  caring for their livestock and caring for the land.
