Active and passionate community members, Chuck and Annette Hunziker are recent landed immigrants to the Tatamagouche area. After hearing about the benefits of Maritime life while they were in Saudi Arabia, they decided to settle in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia.
In moving to Tatamagouche, the couple brought a lot of energy that has spread out amongst the many aspects of the Tatamagouche community that they are involved in. These activities include the LET’S program (Local Exchange Trading System), the film society, the Tatamagouche Film festival, and the Sunrise Trail co-operative, to name a few.
Amongst this long list of impressive endeavours, Chuck and Annette also own and run the local flower shop and bookstore: Village Florist and Hannah’s Books. The Village Florist in Tatamagouche is unique in several ways – one being that they themselves grow a quantity of the flowers that they sell seasonally, the other – they grow and sell certified organic flowers whenever they can!
Chuck and Annette own a lovely 7 acres of which 800 feet is along the Brule shore beachfront. Although they only farm 1 acre for flowers, the garden is very intense and delightful to see in season!
When asked why organic – Chuck and Annette are quick to respond “because it’s the best way.” They said they’ve received great reactions from customers – people who think they’re allergic to flowers are surprised to find that the organic cut flowers do not bother them. Also, people are happy that they have the option to cut down on carbon emissions from purchasing flowers that come from miles and miles away; therefore, it’s also a great local initiative!
These florists impressively began this flower business without ever having prior experience growing flowers. They learned as they went along – from neighbours and with experience they’re still learning a lot about organic production. They do everything they are involved in with care for the greater community– from growing organic flowers, to driving a smart car, the Hunziker’s are committed to a community-oriented organic lifestyle! |
