This 1.5 day training session will be led by Mary Brittain of the Cottage Gardener Heirloom Seedhouse. Focusing on the business aspects of commercial organic seed production, the workshop will address topics such as: identifying target markets for seed, understanding key success factors, determining profitability of seed crops, understanding contracts, selling wholesale/retail, and selling seed exclusively/as part of a mixed farm operation. Based on the business module of COG's national Organic Vegetable Seed Production E-Learning Course, the workshop will help you take the next steps in getting your seed business off the ground.
Please note this workshop will not address seed production topics and will assume participants have an intermediate-advanced level of seed production experience. This workshop is intended for seed growers who have cultivated seed crops for multiple seasons; understand basic plant biology and the requirements for high quality commercial seed production such as isolation distances, minimum populations and selection; and have commercialized seed crops or are planning to do so.
