August 7 Groovy Garden Gathering, 7-9:30pm. At the Seemore Green Community Garden Collective (backyard of 1411 Seymour Street, on the Dal campus), Halifax, NS. Rain or Shine. (There will be tents in case of rain) With music from: It Kills, Long Long Long, Ben Caplan and the Casual Smokers, & Bad Vibrations. Also featuring vegetable themed games, such as a kale eating competition, bobbing for radishes, and more! Admission $5 (no one will be turned away for lack of funds).
August 7 National BBQ Day Meal Exchange is asking Canadians from all across the nation to register their backyard BBQ's to bring their friends and neighbours together for good food, good company and a good cause. This is a great way to bring your friends and family together and educate our neighbours about eating locally produced foods, hunger awareness and our ability to address issues of hunger and food security on a local level. August 8 BBQ picnic and visit to Taproot Organic Farm, Port Williams, NS (12-3pm). Patricia Bishop and Josh Oulton are two of the most dynamic young farmers in Eastern Canada today. Taproot Farm is their 30 acre Certified Organic farm on Starr’s Point in Kings County, NS. They operate one of the largest CSA’s in Atlantic Canada (over 350 subscribers), work closely with chefs (like Michael Howell) and are active members of Slow Food. They have also created Swallows Nest, The first AGRITURISMO (farm stay vacation home) in Nova Scotia. Come join us for a tour of the farm and Swallow’s Nest, a frank discussion of what life as a modern young farming family entails, and enjoy the produce of the Farm and Starrs Point Steers in a picnic prepared by Patricia and Chefs Michael Howell (Tempest) and Jason Lynch (Le Caveau). August 11 Black Currant Field Tour, starting at 5:30 pm, Shepherd Farm Organics located at 66 Whittlesy Lane in Pisquid, PEI. The Organic Agriculture Centre of Canada (OACC) would like to invite all those interested to attend our Black currant field tour. The OACC has been running trials since 2009 to examine the impacts of fertility management and weed control on bush size and yields. As of 2010 we have expanded our trials to assess a variety of cultivars under the Maritime conditions, as well as looking at disease control and examining weed control options. The Maritime Organic Grains Network is pleased to invite you to join us in visiting the AAFC Harrington research station on a tour of the organic potato rotation research plots including a variety of crops and fertility management strategies.
August 12 Field Day 2010, Bouctouche Research Farm, 12-4pm, 1045 Chemin St. Joseph, Bouctouche, NB. Guided tours will be available to view the various reserach projects on fruit and vegetable managemnet systems, including protected structures, organics, and fruits and vegetable cultivar evaluations. Our research projects are collaborative efforts with producers, researchers at the Université de Moncton, the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, other federal ad international establishments and specialists form the NBDAFA.

August 24‘PEI ADAPT Expo - Better Farms Better Life.’ We will be featuring guest presentations, highlighting some of the successful initiatives to which ADAPT has contributed support and we will be engaging participants in discussions on what more ADAPT can do to foster, ‘Better Farms - Better Life,' on Prince Edward Island. August 26 Organic Day at the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition. Join ACORN for Organic Day at the NSPE (August 24-28), a five-day annual event attended by more than 40,000 people. "The EX", includes a major 4-H show, beef and dairy shows, heavy horse pull, light horse show, rodeo, demolition derby, antique farm machinery displays and a wide range of agricultural and craft competitions. September 12 A Celebration of Small Scale Farming, 10am4pm, Halifax County Exhibition Grounds (Middle Musquodoboit), NS. Sponsored by the THINKFARM Working Group, in partnership with Agrapoint, this event features farmer-led workshops on a variety of topics of interest to small-scale farmers: Small Farm Equipment, Farming with Horses, Buying Used Tractors, Soap Making, Beekeeping, Livestock Health, Meat quality, Cheesemaking, Seedling Management, Pastured Livestock, Irrigation Systems. The registration fee covers the cost of admission to the event plus a coupon for use with the food vendors. A single admission is $15 and includes a $5 coupon.
