Klaas and Mary-Howell Martens, with their son Peter, farm 1,600 acres of certified organic grain crops in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, and have farmed organically since 1992. Their crops include organic spelt, heritage and specialty wheats, corn, soybeans, dry beans, malting barley, and processing vegetables, for organic food, feed and seed markets. They also own and operate Lakeview Organic Grain, an organic animal feed and seed business that serves organic farmers throughout the Northeast US. Klaas and Mary-Howell have served on numerous advisory committees/boards including USDA AC21-biotech issues, Soil Health Institute, Cornell University College of Agriculture, and Organic Farming Research Foundation. They have spoken at conferences around the US and Canada; and they have written numerous articles for a wide range of publications. Their latest enterprise is developing a "state-of-the-art” grain cleaning facility that will enhance their ability to clean and market organic food-quality specialty grains and seed.
