with the Recreation and Parks Department of the City of Saint John. It was established to
provide an opportunity for citizens to have a place to garden. The Community Garden is
located on the former site of the Rockwood Elementary School.
The Garden initially consists of over 100 small plots, on which citizens will be able to grow
a variety of vegetables and flowers. The plots are open to residents of Saint John, and are
distributed on a first come basis. Citizens who have plots are required to abide by rules of
the Garden, and pay a nominal fee of $15.
The G.S.J.C.G. committee consists of citizens who are volunteering their services to help
create community gardens. These gardens have been proven to be a great benefit in
communities where they have been established. |

| Description: | Members can expect to receive a box of produce beginning around June 15th and ending
early October. The fresh produce at A Growing Concern Farm is grown without the use of
harmful herbicides or pesticides and is picked at its peak of ripeness and ideal size (no
baseball bat zucchini!!!). There is a wide variety of produce being planted which will
hopefully produce tomatoes, tomatillo, beets, swiss chard, spinach, bush beans, zucchini,
parsnip, radish, lettuce, leeks, peas, cilantro, parsley, chives, turnip, kale, shallots, onions,
garlic, summer savory, dill, potatoes, pole beans, jerusalem artichokes, carrots, melons,
squash, kohlrabi, celeriac, cucumbers, oregano, thyme, mint, basil, sage, rosemary, bee
balm, cut flowers and more. This is the second year of operation as a CSA (2011).

| Description: | This year, ‘Off the Hook’ Community Supported Fishery worked to connect a co-operative
of small-scale, groundfish bottom hook and line fishermen from the Bay of Fundy to
subscribing customers in and around Halifax. Subscribers pay at the beginning of the
summer season for weekly shares of the co-op’s catch of fresh whole haddock and hake.
Like other direct marketing enterprises, CSFs can provide several benefits to small-scale
fishers, including more family income, more market choices, and increased ownership and
livelihood control. Since there are no 'middlemen' involved, fishermen can ensure a fair
price for their catch. Because subscribers sign on to share risks, CSFs can also help keep
protect fishermen's safety by allowing them to decide when it is safe to leave the wharf.
Meanwhile, Off the Hook's subscribers enjoy increased access to the freshest local,
traceable, high quality fish along with renewed connections with local fishing communities
and the ocean that sustains us all. Off the Hook's fish shares will never be old, frozen, or
badly handled, and will always be caught by fishers who believe in sustainable fishing
practices and are working for the future of their communities. |
