Help Wanted: Compost Technician

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, organizes the day-to-day operations of a composting site.  Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others and participates in their training.  Establishes priorities and organizes schedule of batches and equipment use.  Participates in projects and experiments.  Performs a variety of specialized technical tasks in the field of composting.  Coordinates provision of equipment.  Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others.  Maintains records.

Major duties and responsibilities:

Organizes the day-to-day operations of a composting site.  Organizes, distributes, and verifies the work of others and participates in their training.

Establishes priorities and organizes schedule of compost production.  Assesses needs and coordinates provision of equipment and materials to meet these needs.

Participates in projects and experiments in compost development.  Discusses the orientation and technical demands of the projects.  Reviews, selects and modifies methodology.  Assumes responsibility for the technical aspects in the execution of these projects.

Performs a variety of specialized technical tasks such as assessing soil and compost characteristics and selecting inputs and determining requirements for fertilizers.

Participates in the production, storage, and sale of finished products.

Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others.  Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the uses of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results.

Compiles experimental and analytical data.  Prepares reports.  Analyzes and discusses results and their interpretation with others.  Participates in devising new methodology.  Maintains records and files.

Ensures the proper use of equipment and compliance with safety regulations.

Maintains inventory.  Recommends and purchases equipment and material.

Performs accounting functions such as monitoring expenditures, verifying ledgers, and resolving discrepancies.

Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.

Must work well with others.

Education and experience:

Horticulture, Environment or Natural Sciences Technology

Three (3) years’ related experience is an asset
